Cloth Folding (edit, please read) by Ryunk Cloth Folding (edit, please read) by Ryunk
edit: I noticed this has been going around tumblr, and people are literally bashing it because of the ammount of folds. I accept critique as long as it's not obnoxious and just plain rude. I NEVER said this was the right way to draw folds whatsoever. Ever. I even stated it here. It's right over there, but I guess people don't take their time to read the artist's comments. I was just kindly trying to show the people who asked how I usually draw folds. Not only people bashed this tutorial, but they also browsed my gallery and just said every single artwork of mine is wrong. Again, it is a STYLISTIC choice of mine. And I'm not a professional artist. I'm still learning. As I said, I love constructive critique, but being rude is in a whole other level. Just clearing this out.

Gosh, since artblock got me good, I thought I'd do something real quick to show you guys how I usually do the cloth folding on my drawings. I got asked about that a lot, so I hope this helps :)

This is not 100% accurate, it's just the way I found to shade clothes in a nice and easy method. And I'm really sorry for my crappy handwritting, so just let me know if you can't read something and I'll gladly reply to you :D

Thanks for the tutorial! I've had a hard time learning how to draw flod, so thank you! And don't pay attention to negative comments. Everybody has their own style, but not everyone understands that. :)

...people are saying there's too many folds?...it's a fold tutorial...isn't that a good thing, it helps more! It shows how different folds are like...That's what I love about it!

It's a great tutorial, I think people should appreciate the fact you went through the trouble of making this :/

Thanks so much for making this, especially because shading folds in clothes is really difficult, so hooray for this tutorial!! (and besides, adding a lot of good looking folds still looks 51634625235 times better than drawing in 2 or 3 badly done ones :P)

Okay, yeah, there may be too many folds but you've got the basic idea for how to do the shading right.

All joking aside, it's useful. I need to brush up on my art (have been drawing but haven't practiced to improve in three years) and this will help.

I think this is a great tutorial, and very easy to understand. Once someone understands this great concept they can adjust the amount and intensity to there own style. Thank you for sharing!

They did have a point, but they were just obnoxious and rude, which is not helpful at all. I dont understand why people have the need to be so mean.

it's because of anonymity. If they knew you in person they wouldn't be like that.

Fabric is so hard to do especially without having someone in front of you wearing what you want to draw. OTL

Helpful tutorial! Thank you so much! ^_^ Just a question, how would you know where the folds would show up in clothing?

folds result from the cloth being either stretched or squashed. try to figure out where the points of tension are.

It's just a matter of practicing. I love looking at cloth and how it reacts to certain movements/situations, so observing is really the best to be done :) Even standing in front of a mirror helps!
